Maoist always concerned about journos’ security: Dahal

KATHMANDU, FEB 25 -
UCPN (Maoist) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal on Saturday said that the transitional period is in its last phase.
Addressing a program organised for an interaction with the International Media Mission, who are here as invitees for the Federation of Nepali Journalists (FNJ), Dahal said that the political situation of the nation would be stabilized within a few days.
In reply to the question of freedom of expression by the delegates Dahal said that some problems have arisen transgressing the freedom of expression because of the transitional period. However, Dahal claimed that the situation would improve soon.
“We are very much concerned about freedom of expression and security of the journalists. I have been telling the cadres all along that no one should go against the press and media,” said Dahal.
Dahal further said that no one from his party has been involved in violence against journalists within the past two years. However, he claimed that the parties who claim to be democratic are certainly involved in the same.
“Not only have we started taking concern about pres freedom since the people’s war, but we were concerned even during the insurgency,” Dahal claimed.
However, the Media Mission delegates questioned the government’s failure to punish the murderers of journalists Birendra Sah and Prakash Thakuri and said that the proposals for the new constitution do transgress press freedom.
The delegation of International Media Mission arrived in the Capital on Thursday for their five-day visit. They are here to study the situation of journalism in Nepal. During their stay, they would be visiting Janakpur and Biratnagar. The delegation is also set to hold meetings with prominent political leaders.
