Maoist major hindrance for natl govt: Khanal

Jhala Nath Khanal

NEPALGUNJ, JAN 25 - CPN-UML Jhala Nath Khanal said the path on which the current government is moving does not lead the peace and constitution to a logical end.
Addressing a program organised by Press Chautari, Khanal claimed that UCPN (Maoist) is the hindrance to the peace process. “This would neither lead to any agreements nor to the constitution,” said Khanal. Khanal also showed his deep concern towards the government’s decision to legalise the land transactions made by the parallel government run by the Maoists during the conflict.
Hinting towards Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai’s statement that a national government would soon be formed under his leadership, Khanal said that it was just a dream for Bhattarai. “I do not see the possibility. Prime Minister has many dreams. This is one of his fantasies. However, a government built on the four-point deal cannot be taken forth as a national consensus government,” said Khanal.
Khanal said that the peace process is clogged because the Maoist still has not returned the properties seized during the insurgency. “The constitution drafting process has also been affected by the delay in peace process,” he said. Khanal claimed that there was no alternative to an agreement between the major parties and the Madhesi parties.
Furthermore, Khanal urged the Maoist to give up their stand on the directly elected presidential system.
Moreover, Khanal acknowledged that his party made mistakes while endorsing the proposal of 14-state federal governance. “We did some mistakes, but we are further researching about the different aspects of the division of states,” said Khanal.
