Koirala warns of protests

SYANGJA, JAN 05 -
Nepali Congress (NC) President Sushil Koirala has warned of protests against the government if the UCPN (Maoist) does not implement the seven-point agreement at the earliest.

Addressing a press meet at Waling of Syangja district on Thursday, the opposition leader claimed that the Maoist party is yet to return the seized properties, hand over the weapons and dissolve the paramilitary structure of the Young Communist League as agreed in the seven-point deal. The recent activities of the Maoists have raised doubt if the peace process and the constitution writing would conclude on time, Koirala said.

“The Maoists’ attitude to the issue of returning weapons itself shows how loyal they are to the peace building and constitution-drafting processes.”

The NC president said that Maoist Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal was preoccupied with the problems within his own party, and that he could not even dare to take up the responsibility of concluding the peace process and issuing a new constitution.

As for the reports on internal rife within the NC, Koirala said those were ‘media exaggeration’ and all was well in his party. He claimed that every decision taken by the NC would be based on the party’s statute and procedure.http://www.ekantipur.com/the-kathmandu-post/2012/01/05/top-story/koirala-warns-of--protests/230063.html
