Civil Defense chief Benito Ramos said that he has corrected an earlier death toll from the health department of nearly 1,500 to 1,249 based on an actual count of identified and unidentified bodies recovered by soldiers, police, firemen and other rescue workers. He said the exact number of missing could no longer be determined but the search for bodies will continue. Heavy rains overnight Monday over the eastern provinces of Mindanao have triggered floods and forced the evacuation of thousands of families, many by military helicopter, he said. Most of the dead from last week's floods were from the northern Mindanao c

Church Leaders Debate Self-Defense

Church leaders in Nigeria are sharply divided over how to react to a surge in violent attacks against Christians and churches in the country's Muslim-majority north. Hundreds of Christians have been killed and churches burnt in regular attacks launched this year by Fulani herdsmen in Jos and members of the Boko Haram terrorist sect in Kaduna, Borno, and Niger states. Such attacks increased this spring following the controversial April election of Christian president Goodluck Jonathan. More than 800 people were killed in the violence, mostly in northern states. The Evangelical Church Winning All (ECWA), a major northern denomination headquartered in Jos, said it lost more than 32 members, three ministers, and 48 churches. The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) said 84 of its churches were destroyed as well. In November, a series of church bombings killed dozens in Yobe state. In September, a Christian family of eight was killed in Barkin Ladi in Plateau sta

set up for a comeback

Image
TODAY’S SCRIPTURE “For though a righteous man falls seven times, he rises again...” (Proverbs 24:16, NIV) TODAY’S WORD from Joel and Victoria Life is full of things that try to push us down. We all face disappointments and setbacks. Maybe you received some bad news about your health or perhaps a relationship didn’t work out. That was a setback. It’s easy to get discouraged or lose your enthusiasm or even be tempted to just settle where you are. But if we’re going to see God’s best, we have to have a “bounce back” mentality. That means when you get knocked down, you don’t stay down. You get back up again. You have to know that every time adversity comes against you, it’s a setup for a comeback! Remember, as a believer in Jesus, the same power that raised Christ from the dead lives on the inside of you. There is no challenge too difficult, no obstacle too high, no sickness, no disappointment, no person, nothing that can keep you from your God-given destiny. If you stay

Twinkly Lights in the Palm Tree: Why I Love Christmas in Miami

Image
Miami is not a place that comes to mind when most people think of Christmas. Carols, eggnog, and cookies by the fireplace, numerous viewings of It's a Wonderful Life , childhood memories, and traditions that bind the present to the past seem at odds with the sun, beaches, and the aggressive nightlife that characterize the city. This is our first Christmas in Miami. My family moved here from Nebraska in July. Like our city, our new life is now full of extremes, contrasts, and discontinuities. The studio where I work with an internationally renowned artist consists of an 18,000-square-foot warehouse and is in a neighborhood filled with drug dealers, the homeless, prostitutes, and the Miami Rescue Mission . The contrast between this neighborhood and the image of art and culture in Miami Beach could not be more revealing. In Miami, the first Sunday after Thanksgiving is not the beginning of Advent, but rather the beginning of Art Basel: Miami Beach , an international art fair

Jesus Film Ire

T wo Christian men working with a nongovernmental organization in largely peaceful Bangladesh were hacked to death on July 27. Police and local officials said Islamic extremists were likely responsible. The incident occurred in Dhopapara village in Boalmari, Faridpur district, about 90 miles from the capital, Dhaka. Tapan Kumar Roy, 27, and Liplal Mardi, 21, worked for Christian Life Bangladesh (CLB). Along with educational films on arsenic poisoning, mother-and-child health care, and aids prevention, they often showed the Jesus film—and then only at the invitation of local villagers. Swapon Bose, a well-known Christian leader who was familiar with the two evangelists, said an official at a local Islamic school had threatened the men prior to the murders. Some human-rights observers say the country, which is 86 percent Muslim, is becoming increasingly radicalized. According to Ecumenical News International, Augustine Dipak Karmakar, general secretary of the Chu

Iranian pastor awaiting execution may face another year in prison

Image
The church in Iran has experienced a crackdown in the last year AP There are unconfirmed reports that an Iranian pastor sentenced to death for apostasy may have to spend another year in prison. The case of Pastor Yousef Nadarkhani has twice been referred to the Supreme Leader of Iran, who has yet to issue a decision. Christian Solidarity Worldwide said that a final ruling is expected at anytime and that it had received unconfirmed reports indicating that execution may be delayed for up to a year to allow time to convince the pastor to renounce his faith. The organisation said it had also received reports that another jailed pastor, Behnam Irani, was suffering as a result of "frequent" assaults by inmates. He is serving a five year sentence in Ghezel Hesar prison in Karaj for carrying out an "action against national security". The beatings have reportedly been so severe that he now has difficulty walking. There are reports that the pastor was held incommun

Making fishers of men

Image
Posted: Saturday, December 17, 2011, 12:32 (GMT) Full Size [+] Inspired by the missionary work started by David Livingstone around central Africa's lakes, Operation Mobilisation is equipping Christians in local villages in the task of sharing their faith. Its mission base in Mpulungu, in Zambia, is serving as a training hub for locals as well as people from further afield, like Congo and Tanzania, which border the southern part of Lake Tanganyika. OM takes the approach that these men and women are able to reach their own people far better than any foreigners could, having intimate knowledge of the cultures and languages. The two-week training course gives them the opportunity to learn the skills that will help them to spread the Good News. Classroom topics include discipling others, supporting the local church, roles in marriage, and evangelism training. In the first few days, the participants go fishing together on the lake to practise sharing the Gospel with eac

Nepal hopeful after first official Christmas

Nepal celebrated its first Christmas ever after being declared a federal republic in December 2007. The first church was built in Nepal just 50 years ago, under monarchial rule and although there are over 200 churches and at least 400,000 Christians today, the small Christian community has often faced repression in the past. This year's Christmas ushered in a new era for the largely Hindu and Buddhist country, with the government even declaring December 25 a public holiday. With Christians making up only 0.5 per cent of the population, many saw the government's move as a positive indication that the long-awaited day of freedom has come. "We are very happy that the government has declared Christmas as a public holiday. This year we will pray for the peace and happiness of Nepali people as we set our foot on a new Nepal," Binod Gurung, president of Nepal Catholic Society, said. Nepal President Dr Ram Baran Yadav and Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal joined other p

Nepal Agrees to Give Christians a Cemetery

Image
ADVERTISEMENT After spirited protests by Christians, Nepal authorities have finally conceded to their demand for a Christian cemetery amid a Hindu culture of cremation. "We are happy," said Chari Bahadur Gahatraj, a leading pastor and secretary of the Christian Advisory Committee for a New Constitution, which led the protests. "We are now waiting to know the four corners of the burial land." Gahatraj said the government ministries of culture and interior affairs have created a committee to identify land for a Christian cemetery in the crowded capital of Kathmandu. Another committee will study the feasibility of allocating land for Christian cemeteries in all of the Himalayan nation's 75 districts. "It is a big victory for us," said pastor Gahatraj. "Our protests have borne fruit." Months of Christian protests in Kathmandu, which included a parade of coffins and a chain fast, came after officials began strict

Calling Forth Seeds of Greatness

Image
TODAY’S SCRIPTURE "Blessed is the one who trusts in the LORD, whose confidence is in him" (Jeremiah 17:7, NIV) TODAY’S WORD from Joel and Victoria Today, I want to declare words of blessing over you. I want to call forth your seeds of greatness. Someone may have told you what you can't become, but I'm here to tell you what you can become. As a believer in Jesus, all of the blessings in His Word belong to you! Receive it by faith today! You are a person of destiny. You are equipped. You are talented. You are creative. You were designed for a purpose. You are loved, chosen and accepted by Almighty God. There is nothing you can do to make Him love you more and nothing you can do to make Him love you less. His grace is sufficient for you. His angels have charge over you. You are blessed coming in and blessed going out. You have uncommon wisdom. You have uncommon joy. You have uncommon peace. He is your vindicator, and He will fight for you! No weapon formed a

Faith in Action

Image
TODAY’S SCRIPTURE "No unbelief or distrust made him waver (doubtingly question) concerning the promise of God, but he grew strong and was empowered by faith as he gave praise and glory to God" (Romans 4:20 AMP) TODAY’S WORD from Joel and Victoria Just as putting your physical body into action makes it grow strong, putting your faith in action through prayer and thanksgiving will cause your faith to grow strong, too. I love what this verse says about Abraham: No unbelief made him waver regarding the promise of God. What does it mean to waver? To waver means to go back and forth. It's a very unsteady posture. Spiritual wavering is when we go back and forth in believing the promises of God. Wavering shows up in our words and actions. Notice this verse didn't say that Abraham never had unbelief or doubtful thoughts. It tells us that he didn't let those thoughts cause him to waver in his words, actions and resolve. He took captive every thought and stood

This is the Will of God

Image
TODAY’S SCRIPTURE “Give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus” (1 Thessalonians 5:18, NIV) TODAY’S WORD from Joel and Victoria So many people today wonder what God’s will is for their lives. Oftentimes, they look for big things like signs and supernatural events. But really, God’s will for us unfolds each and every day as we obey Him and serve Him with a thankful heart. When you wake up every morning with an attitude of praise and thanksgiving, you just took a step toward your destiny — you are walking in the will of God. When you go throughout your day thanking God that His hand of blessing is upon you, thanking Him for ordering your steps, thanking Him for a new day, you are taking another step in His will. Today, remember to keep the right perspective. We should have goals and dreams and look forward to a bright future, but the way you live your life today is what’s going to get you to where you need to be tomorrow. Keep praising,

DARE TO BELIEVE

Have you ever wanted to do something but you just didn't have the courage? Are there things that you've longed to do but fear has held you back? Do you ever hear or read a promise from God's Word and say to yourself, “Someday that's going to be me”? I believe we've all asked questions like this, but I want you to know that it's a new season. It's time for a fresh start. It's time to think differently and do things you've never done before. In fact…I dare you! I dare you to believe God for the unthinkable…to believe His promises like never before. We can have confidence that EVERY WORD He's said is true. God wants to give you all of His “great and precious promises” (2 Peter 1:4). Everything in our relationship with God begins with believing. Believe today that God exists and that He has so much more in store for you! As you read this, set your heart fully on the Lord and believe that He is the source of everything you need. As we look at all tha
